When applying for scholarships, you should NEVER have to pay to apply. You should also NEVER have to provide sensitive personal information like your Social Security Number (SSN). If membership is required to apply, the membership should ALWAYS BE FREE. Basically, NEVER PAY FOR ANYTHING. Those are scams! Some scholarships may ask for your address or proof of enrollment. That's fine, but always verify you're actually talking to the scholarship provider and not an imposter. Scams in scholarships are rampant, be careful! When clicking on the button to apply, you will leave Scholarships That Work and go to the application page for that organization outside this site. The Lynton Starfish Annual Scholarship - School of Education is a $1,666.67+, need-based, merit-based, and renewable award in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, and more. Mr. Lynton has established The Lynton Starfish Annual Scholarship to support students during their critical final year, when in addition to their coursework they receive hands-on training through student teaching or internships. Mr. Lynton highly values how education can both promote one’s own personal growth and enhance an individual’s ability to positively affect the lives of others. After many years focusing his philanthropic efforts on organizations addressing broad societal issues and large-scale disasters, Mr. Lynton wished to direct part of his charitable giving to helping individual students. The name of the Scholarship refers to the popular Starfish Story, in which a man is walking along a deserted beach after a powerful storm has washed up thousands of starfish. The tide is going out, and he notices a young boy who is picking up starfish, one at a time, and throwing them back in the ocean. When the man asks the boy why he is doing that, the boy replies that if he didn’t the starfish would die for lack of oxygen. “But", says the man, “there are thousands on this beach, and this must be happening on hundreds of beaches along the coast. You can’t possibly make a difference." The boy then smiles, bends down and picks up another starfish, and as he throws it back into the water he says “Made a difference to that one!” Mr. Lynton hopes that in addition to the direct benefit of the Scholarship, the story behind its name may inspire its recipients to create positive change even when the action taken addresses only a very small part of a challenge that seems overwhelming. Mr. Lynton is a longtime Colorado Front Range resident who has pursued a variety of professional endeavors and volunteer opportunities.
