What is The Martin Sorkin Memorial Scholarships?

The Martin Sorkin Memorial Scholarships is a $1,000+, merit-based, and renewable award for full-time students in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, and more. Mr. Sorkin helped develop policies for distributing surplus crops to countries facing food shortages. This effort evolved into the Food for Peace program, now administered by the U.S. Agency for International Development. Mr. Sorkin also served as assistant agriculture secretary and was economic adviser to Agriculture Secretary Ezra Taft Benson. Mr. Sorkin left the Agriculture Department in 1961 to work as an independent consultant. He provided economic consulting services to many trade groups and agribusiness corporations, including Archer Daniels Midland, until his death. He remained an unofficial consultant to high-ranking Agriculture Department officials throughout his life. In the 1960s and 1970s, he served on several presidential advisory commissions on food, nutrition and economics.
