THE YVETTE MATTHEWS MEMORIAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP One (1) $1,535 Scholarship (non-renewable) for 1 year)-Yvette Matthews, an acclaimed soprano soloist, chorister, and teacher died May 6, 2020 at her home in Baltimore. Yvette was born in Cherry Hill, an inner-section of Baltimore City where classical music was never heard except from her singing. She was a chorister at Western High school and graduated from Coppin State College in 1971. While at Coppin, her talent was discovered by Dr. Maurice Murphy, who later became her music professor and voice teacher. From that encounter, Yvette became a member of the St. James Choir and continued to study full time with Dr. Murphy. She won various vocal competitions and appeared with the Baltimore Opera, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and The Baltimore Choral Arts Society. Throughout the 80's and early 90's, Yvette appeared with the Houston Grand Opera touring company which eventually took her to the Metropolitan Opera in New York and La Scala in Milan, Italy. In her later years, Yvette continued her love of singing and joined the Brown Memorial Park choir until her death. This scholarship is a testament to one of Baltimore's finest musicians.
